Best Time to Visit Virginia Beach: Month-by-Month (2026)
ShoreDrop Team · Jul 28, 2026
The best time to visit Virginia Beach is May through October
For warm water, full amenities, and the biggest event lineup, come in peak summer (June–August). For the best mix of warm weather, thinner crowds, and lower prices, target the shoulder seasons — May to early June, and September to October. Here's the month-by-month breakdown.
Spring (April–May): the season wakes up
April: Days warm into the 60s–70s°F. The ocean is still cold, but the calendar heats up with the Shamrock events, kite festivals, and — in years it runs — the Something in the Water festival, which unofficially kicks off beach season.
May: One of the best-value months. Highs reach the mid-70s, crowds are still light, and Memorial Day weekend marks the true start of summer. Great for a relaxed beach day before the peak-season rush.
Summer (June–August): peak season
This is Virginia Beach at full volume. Daytime highs sit in the low-to-high 80s°F, the ocean is warm enough for hours in the water, and the boardwalk, concerts, and festivals run non-stop.
June: Everything is open and the weather is reliably beautiful. Weekdays are still manageable; weekends fill up.
July: Peak of peak. Expect the warmest water, the biggest crowds, top hotel prices, and the toughest parking. The Fourth of July week is one of the busiest of the year.
August: Still packed, and home to the East Coast Surfing Championships (the country's longest-running surf contest) in late August.
Peak-season reality check: hotels book up months ahead for flagship weekends, and oceanfront parking is genuinely difficult. Booking your beach gear ahead of time — delivered and set up for you — is one of the easiest ways to sidestep the summer chaos.
Fall (September–October): the local's secret
Ask a Virginia Beach local when to visit and many will say September. The summer crowds thin out after Labor Day, but temperatures stay warm (mid-70s to low-80s°F) and the water is often still comfortable well into October.
September: Thinner crowds, warm water, and the Neptune Festival Boardwalk Weekend on the last weekend of the month — famous for its international sand-sculpting championship, live music, and 30 blocks of vendors.
October: Mild, uncrowded, and still pleasant for beach days early in the month, with events like the Craft Beer Festival rounding out the season.
Winter (November–March): quiet and off-season
Winters are mild by East Coast standards — highs in the upper 30s to low 50s°F — but too cold for a traditional beach day. It's the least crowded and cheapest time to visit, good for whale-watching season, indoor attractions like the Virginia Aquarium, and quiet beach walks.
So when should you go?
Best overall weather + events: June–August
Best value (fewer crowds, lower prices, still warm): May and September–October
Cheapest and quietest: November–March
What is the cheapest month to visit Virginia Beach?
